Emberton Park Sailing Club

The sailing club at Emberton sits right on the Great Ouse, about a mile outside Olney, and it's a proper working water sports hub rather than a tourist attraction in the traditional sense. If you're into sailing or just fancy watching boats slice across the water, it's worth a potter down. The marina itself is modest - wooden jetties, a scatter of dinghies and small cruisers, the usual smell of rope and river mud. On a decent day the water's busy enough to be interesting without being chaotic.

This isn't the place to bring kids expecting a theme park experience. They'll get bored within twenty minutes unless they're genuinely keen on boats. But if you're staying at Ekeney House Campsite down the road and fancied a riverside walk with a bit of nautical atmosphere, it fits nicely. You can walk the towpath either direction for miles - the Ouse Valley Way runs right through here. The club itself isn't really set up for casual visitors wandering about, though locals use the adjacent stretch of riverbank freely enough.

Go in summer when the water's active and the riverside walk is pleasant. Winter's muddy and quiet. Most of the club's facilities are for members, so don't expect a cafe or visitor centre. What you get is a genuine slice of English river life - unglamorous, functional, and quite nice if you appreciate that sort of thing. The real draw is the walk itself rather than the club.
