Ely - Peterborough line

The railway line between Ely and Peterborough cuts through some of England's flattest, most honest countryside - the kind of landscape that doesn't shout for attention but rewards those who actually look. This isn't a destination you tick off in two hours; it's something to experience if you're staying in the area, perhaps catching a train ride or simply watching the trains pass through the fens from a nearby vantage point.

What makes it worth knowing about is the sheer engineering audacity of it. The line opened in 1847 and threads through fenland that was reclaimed, drained, and transformed. You get a proper sense of how the Victorians imposed order on watery wilderness. The trains themselves - modern stock mainly, though heritage services run seasonally - are less interesting than the journey itself. The landscape is dead flat, cathedral spire visible for miles, and somehow that emptiness is more striking than mountains.

This appeals most to railway enthusiasts and landscape photographers. Casual tourists will find it pleasant but unremarkable unless you're genuinely interested in Victorian engineering or the fenland itself. If you're based at Hatters Meadows or Heatherbield Lodge, both just outside Ely, it's worth a wander to the station and a ride towards Peterborough just to experience how different this corner of England feels.

Go in spring when the fens are greening up, or on a clear winter's day when the light is extraordinary. Summer can feel a bit flat - literally and figuratively.
