Elmfield Park

Elmfield Park sits just outside Doncaster, a proper little nature reserve that catches a lot of people off guard. It's the kind of place where you turn up expecting five minutes of mooching about and end up staying twice as long. Woodland trails wind through, and if you time it right - early morning or late afternoon - you might spot deer or hear the proper birdlife going on in the trees. The pathways are manageable, nothing extreme, and there's enough going on to hold the attention of families with kids who aren't quite ready for serious hiking.

The reserve works nicely as a break in the middle of a holiday park stay - Sunnyview Touring Park is only a couple of miles away, making it an easy pit stop. You're looking at maybe an hour for a decent wander if you're taking your time, less if you're just stretching your legs. There's genuine wildlife value here rather than manicured gardens, which means some days are better than others depending on what's about. Spring and autumn tend to be good bets for spotting things.

It's free to access, which removes any sting from turning up on a quiet afternoon and finding not much happening. The trails aren't well-signposted everywhere, so don't expect it to be fussed over. That's partly what makes it feel real though - this is working land, not a visitor attraction dressed up as one. Worth knowing about if you're based nearby, rather than worth planning a trip around.
