Ellon Castle

The ruins of Ellon Castle sit quietly on a bend of the River Ythan, just outside the town of Ellon itself. What remains today is largely stonework and earthworks - this isn't a castle you'll wander through intact rooms in, but rather a place to stand on the bank and piece together what once stood here. It dates back centuries, though the exact timeline is hazy without proper signage.

You're essentially looking at archaeological remains rather than a visitor attraction with facilities. The castle grounds are accessible if you can find your way down from the road, but there's no formal entrance fee or visitor infrastructure that I could find. It's the sort of place local walkers know about rather than something with advertising or opening hours.

For history enthusiasts comfortable with fragments and interpretation, it's worth a short stop if you're already in Ellon. Kids will probably lose interest within ten minutes unless they're genuinely into medieval fortifications. The riverside location is pleasant enough for a leg-stretch, especially if you're based at Ythan Valley Campsite just four miles away - that would make a reasonable morning walk before heading elsewhere.

Don't expect crowds or facilities. Bring a camera and perhaps a book on Aberdeenshire history if you want context. The appeal is more about the setting and quiet than any spectacular remains. On balance, it's better as an add-on to another day out than a destination in itself.
