Ellenbrook Fields

There's a proper stretch of open grassland east of St Albans that locals have been quietly enjoying for years while visitors buzz past to somewhere else. Ellenbrook Fields is a nature reserve that doesn't shout about itself, which is rather the point.

It's a working landscape - rough meadows, scrubby woodland edges, and the kind of ground that changes with the seasons. Spring brings wildflowers if you time it right. Walkers come here because it's accessible from Commons Wood Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the way, and you can stretch your legs without the crowds that hit the bigger attractions in Hertfordshire.

Don't expect a manicured park or any facilities to speak of. There are no visitor centres, no refreshment stands, no charge at the gate. It's free to wander, and that's because it functions as a proper nature reserve - the kind of place where birdwatchers actually get something worth noting and where families can let kids run about on grass without worrying about trampling flower beds.

You'll get most out of it if you're a keen walker or someone interested in local wildlife. An hour's loop is pleasant. Two hours if you're really taking your time. It's the sort of place that fits well into a park holiday in the area - less headline-grabbing than the major spots, but genuinely useful if you need somewhere quiet to clear your head between other activities. Early morning visits are noticeably better for seeing anything alive.
