Eling Water Park

The tide mill at Eling is one of those places that stops you mid-walk and makes you think - people have been harnessing water here since medieval times. It's a working mill powered by the tidal Eling River, and you can watch it operate when conditions are right, which adds a genuine element of unpredictability to a visit. The structure itself is modest rather than grand, but that's part of its appeal - there's something honest about it.

You're looking at a proper working mill, not a museum piece. On the right tide, the water wheel turns and you get to see the mechanical guts doing their job. The riverside setting is lovely, and the walk through Ashurst to reach it gives you a flavour of the New Forest edge rather than the bustle of a tourist trap. Children find the water mechanics engaging, though a visit isn't going to eat up half your day - allow a couple of hours maximum, including the walk there and back.

It works well as part of a broader New Forest exploration. You're only six miles from New Forest National Park itself, and both Ashurst Campsite and the excellent Matley Wood Campsite are within easy reach - perfect for a camping trip where you're mixing woodland walks with coastal heritage spots. Best visited on a rising tide, obviously, so check the tidal times before you head out. The entry fee is reasonable, and there's something satisfying about supporting a working watermill rather than a corporate heritage site.
