Eling Tide Mill

The working watermill at Eling sits right on the edge of the Beaulieu River, and it's genuinely one of those places where you can watch an actual industrial process happening - which is rarer than you'd think. The tide powers the whole thing, filling a pond behind the mill and then releasing water through the wheel as it empties. It's been doing this since 1755, and the locals take it seriously.

You get to see the machinery in action if the tide's right, which does require some planning. The mill itself is compact - you're not talking a half-day visit here. More like an hour, ninety minutes if you're properly keen on how mills work or you grab a cup of tea. The setting matters though. It's genuinely peaceful, and there's a tidal mill museum attached that explains what's happening without getting too technical.

This works brilliantly as part of a New Forest National Park trip (it's only six miles from Ashurst). The park's got plenty of longer walks and wildlife spotting, so you can use Eling Tide Mill as a focused, educational break rather than trying to stretch it into a full afternoon. Families with kids aged eight upwards tend to find the mechanics interesting enough, and there's something satisfying about watching water do the heavy lifting.
