Elford heath

A proper slice of lowland heath - the sort of place you walk through thinking it's just scrubland, then realise you're surrounded by something genuinely rare. Elford Heath sits a few miles south of Stafford and represents one of those habitats that's almost vanished from England. The vegetation is sparse, heathery, with gorse and bracken depending on the season. You'll spot birds here that don't turn up in your average park: nightjar if you're lucky at dusk, woodlark, and the whole insect population that depends on this open ground.

It's not dramatic. There's no café, no car park that announces itself, no interpretation panels spelling everything out. That's rather the point. Come here if you like quiet walks where the landscape does the talking, or if you're into wildlife photography and want to catch something less obvious than the usual woodland suspects. Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on activity after twenty minutes - there's no obvious loop, no destination point. But walkers and nature enthusiasts, especially birdwatchers during migration seasons, will find it worthwhile.

Allow an hour or two depending on your pace and how serious you are with binoculars. Spring and early summer are best for breeding birds; autumn brings migrants. Since Elford Heath is free to access and sits only a couple of miles from both Fledgling Farm and Copper Beech Glamping, it slots perfectly into a Staffordshire camping trip - a morning ramble before heading back to your tent or glamping setup. Parking can be a bit ad-hoc, so check locally before you visit.
