Elegug Stacks

Two dramatic sea stacks rise from the cliffs near Pembroke like stone sentries guarding the Pembrokeshire coast. The Elegug Stacks are what you get when geology decides to show off - towering rock formations that have been carved out by wind and waves over millennia, leaving these jaw-dropping pillars standing in the surf below.

You'll need to walk to see them properly. The coastal path delivers you to a viewpoint where the stacks come into view suddenly, and it's genuinely impressive. On a clear day the detail is extraordinary - you can pick out the layering in the rock, watch seabirds wheeling around the summits. The walk itself is easy enough, though the cliff-edge sections require basic common sense and decent footwear.

Walkers absolutely get the most from this. Families with young children might find it a quick photo stop rather than a long expedition - twenty minutes of looking, then back to camp. History buffs will appreciate that you're standing on some seriously old geology here, though there's no interpretation on site to explain it. The stacks are free to view, completely unmanned, and you can visit anytime.

If you're based at one of the nearby spots - Parke Farm Camping is only two miles away, Freshwater East's caravan site five-and-a-bit - this is a proper must-do addition to a Pembrokeshire coastal itinerary. Pair it with a proper walk along the Tenby cliffs further east, and you've got a cracking day. Go early or late to dodge tour groups, and bring a camera with a decent zoom if you want to see the seabirds properly.
