Eilean Dubh

Dark Island - that's what Eilean Dubh means, and it lives up to the name. This small forested isle sits in a loch near Aviemore, a proper pocket of Highland wilderness that doesn't get the foot traffic of more famous spots. The walk in takes you through native pine woodland, the kind of ancient-feeling forest that makes you understand why people used to tell stories about these places.

What you're really doing here is a gentle forest ramble. There's no visitor centre, no café, no faffing about - you walk in, you look at the trees and water, you remember why Scotland smells the way it does. The island itself is small enough that you won't be spending all day, but the surrounding woodland is worth taking slowly. Early morning or late afternoon light filters through the pines in a way that photographs never quite capture.

Families with children aged eight and up will manage it fine. Younger kids might get restless unless they're keen on spotting wildlife. This isn't a destination in itself - it's the sort of thing you do when you're staying at nearby Dalraddy Holiday Park and want an easy half-day walk that feels properly remote without requiring scrambling boots or a packed lunch for twelve hours.

Go in autumn if you can. The light's better, the midges are fewer, and the place feels even quieter than usual. Free to access, naturally - it's just a walk through the woods.
