Machynlleth itself is worth half a day - the Clock Tower in the town square is hard to miss, and there's decent walking country immediately around it. If you're basing yourself at Gwerniago Campsite or Sunbeach Holiday Park nearby, St David's works well as a rainy-day activity or a gentle morning before tackling the hills. Neither park is particularly wild - Gwerniago gets better reviews - but both put you within easy striking distance of proper Snowdonia walking when the weather cooperates.
