Edlington Pitwood

The pitwood here is what remains of Edlington's industrial past - a landscape shaped entirely by coal extraction and the communities that grew around it. What you're looking at is reclaimed land, transformed over decades from bare colliery spoil into something approaching woodland. It's a proper walk through South Yorkshire's bones, really.

The trees have taken hold well enough, and there are paths threading through that give you a sense of what was worked out of the ground beneath your feet. It's not a beauty spot - no one's pretending otherwise - but it matters as a record. Walkers appreciate it for what it represents rather than for scenic drama. You can spend anything from half an hour to a couple of hours here depending on how far you want to range.

If you're based at Sunnyview Touring Park just down the road, it's an easy leg-stretch without needing the car. Families with older kids might find the industrial heritage angle interesting; younger ones will probably get bored once they've explored the immediate trails. The site works best as part of a broader Doncaster area itinerary rather than as a destination in itself.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so bring what you need. Best tackled in dry weather - after rain it can be heavy going underfoot. The fact it exists at all, recovered from what was essentially a crater, says something about what's possible when land gets a chance to heal.
