Edics Hill

The highest point in Cambridgeshire doesn't announce itself much. At 128 metres, Edics Hill near Royston is more of a gentle rise than a dramatic summit, but that's rather the appeal. You get proper views across the Fens and into Hertfordshire without any of the scrambling or crowds you'd find at hillier destinations.

It's accessible walking terrain - nothing that'll defeat anyone moderately fit - and the surrounding area is pleasant rather than spectacular. Families with younger children won't get bored (the actual ascent is straightforward), but they might not be gripped for hours either. Older kids and proper walkers will appreciate the landscape for what it is: an honest view of East Anglian countryside without pretension.

The real draw is the peace. You won't fight for space up here, and the walk itself beats the destination. If you're staying at Shepreth Mill Caravan & Camping Holiday Park just down the road (2.4 miles away), it's an easy morning outing to work off some energy before heading to other attractions in the area. Guilden Gate Glamping is slightly further at 4.2 miles and offers a different base if you prefer that setup.

Going early keeps it quiet, and there's nothing to stop you making it part of a broader walking loop around Royston. Don't expect a cafe or facilities at the summit itself - bring a drink and snacks if you're making a proper day of it. It's free, naturally, and works best as part of a wider ramble rather than a destination in itself.
