Edgar Purnell Hooley

The man who invented tarmac deserves better than a blue plaque on a Nottingham street corner, but that's what Edgar Purnell Hooley gets. Walk past the spot where he developed his revolutionary road surface in the 1900s and you might miss it entirely - which seems a shame given how his invention literally paved the way for modern Britain.

Hooley was a Scottish engineer who, while living in Nottingham, noticed tar oozing from the roads and had a eureka moment. He realised binding tar and stone together created a far superior surface to the broken granite that preceded it. The technique, which he patented and named 'tarmac', changed infrastructure forever. Today's motorways, car parks, and pavements all trace back to his breakthrough.

This isn't a museum or visitor centre - it's purely a historical marker. History enthusiasts and road-geek types will appreciate tracking it down for the photo, but don't expect facilities or detailed interpretation. The real story lives in how our roads actually work.

Nottingham itself is walkable enough, and if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby glamping spots - Birdholme or Wolds Wine Estate are both excellent - the marker is easily reached as part of a town wander. Allow five minutes to find it, maybe ten if you want to hunt down a coffee and ponder how one man's observation transformed transport. It's free, obviously, and works year-round. More a footnote than a destination, but worth knowing about.
