Eckington Park

The old colliery site at Eckington, just outside Sheffield, has been transformed into something genuinely worth a visit. What you're walking through is the ghost of South Yorkshire's industrial past - but it doesn't feel grim or mournful. Instead, it's turned into a proper green space where you can actually read the landscape like an archaeology book.

The park itself is open grassland with some lovely woodland bits, and you'll spot the remnants if you know what you're looking for: old railway lines, the contours left by mining activity, the way the land dips and rises unnaturally. If you're into industrial heritage, this is quietly fascinating. Families with kids of walking age will enjoy it too - there's something about spotting evidence of what used to be there, making it a bit more interesting than a standard park walk.

Come on a weekday morning for peace. Weekends can get busy with locals. Allow a good hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photos or want to explore all the paths. The nearest town is Sheffield, which has plenty of decent facilities.

It works brilliantly as part of a wider park itinerary. Rother Valley Country Park is only 3 miles away and far more manicured if you want that contrast, while Poolsbrook Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is even closer at 4.2 miles - proper base camp territory if you're planning a few days exploring the area. Eckington Park fills the gap between heavy-hitting attractions nicely.
