Eccleshall Castle

The ruins of Eccleshall Castle sit quietly on the edge of this small Staffordshire village, a jumble of red sandstone walls that once belonged to the Bishops of Lichfield. What you're looking at is medieval power - the castle was built in the 13th century and spent centuries as a proper fortress before falling into decline. Today, the remains are fragmentary but atmospheric; you can make out sections of the old curtain wall and get a real sense of how imposing it must have been.

The landscape around here is gentle rather than dramatic, so pair it with a walk around the village or a proper exploration of Stafford itself rather than expecting the castle to fill an entire day. Best visited on a clear day when the stonework shows properly against the sky.
