Eaton Community Park

A proper slice of countryside just a few miles from Nottingham's sprawl, Eaton Community Park is one of those places locals have known about for ages while visitors zoom straight past on the A roads. The reserve itself is built around former gravel workings - the sort of industrial scar that's been brilliantly rewilded into something worth stopping for.

You're looking at wetland pools where kingfishers hunt if you're lucky, grassland that's wild enough to feel genuinely untamed, and woodland that pulls you in properly on darker afternoons. The walking is straightforward - well-trodden paths mean you won't end up in the reeds - and the whole circuit takes maybe ninety minutes depending on how much you faff about with binoculars. Bird watchers will have a field day, especially spring and autumn when migrants pass through. Families with primary-age kids find it engaging; younger toddlers might get bored after an hour since there's no playground to speak of.

It's free to wander in, which is the lovely bit. No visitor centre, no café, so bring a flask if you're settling in for a proper morning. If you're based at Janson Fishery Caravan & Camping nearby, this makes an excellent escape from campsite routine - close enough for a half-day out, quiet enough that you'll actually see wildlife rather than queue behind day-trippers. Winter and early spring are best; you'll have the paths nearly to yourself.
