Ancient woodland that actually feels like you've stepped back in time - Eatenden Wood sprawls across Sussex with the kind of dense canopy and tangled undergrowth you rarely find near Battle these days. Oak and beech dominate, with a proper forest floor of moss and leaf litter that muffles your footsteps. There are paths through it, though nothing signposted or manicured - you're walking on established routes rather than managed trails.

This is for people who like their nature a bit rough round the edges. Families with older kids will get on well here - there's room to explore, fallen logs to clamber over, and enough space that you won't feel crowded even on a decent day. Younger children might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes unless they're the type to hunt for insects and build dens. Walkers after something more rugged than the typical Sussex Country Estate will appreciate the authenticity of it.

Timing-wise, allow at least an hour if you're doing a proper wander, longer if you're the sort who stops to examine bark and listen for birds. Early morning or late afternoon is when you'll see the most wildlife. The nearby campsites - Beech Estate is closest at just over a mile away - make this an excellent addition to a forest-focused holiday in the area. You can combine it with Battle itself if the mood takes, but honestly, most visitors come for the woodland itself.
