Eastwater Cavern

Deep underground beneath the Mendip Hills, this natural limestone cave system offers a proper caving adventure just outside Wells. Unlike the tourist-friendly showcaves at nearby Wookey Hole, Eastwater Cavern is the real deal - expect to get muddy, squeeze through tight passages, and use proper caving gear.

Serious cavers and adventure seekers will love the challenge here. The cave stretches for several kilometres underground, with sections requiring crawling through narrow tunnels and scrambling over rocky formations. You'll need headlamps, old clothes you don't mind ruining, and a reasonable level of fitness.

Families with young children should probably stick to Cheddar Gorge's show caves instead - this isn't a gentle stroll with handrails and electric lighting. The cave stays at a constant cool temperature year-round, so bring warm layers even in summer.

Access details can be tricky to pin down, so contact local caving groups before making the trip. Most visits are arranged through Somerset caving clubs rather than as casual drop-ins.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks around Wells, it makes for an exciting day out between more conventional Mendips attractions. Just don't plan anything too clean for afterwards - proper caving leaves its mark.
