Eastmill

The Romans left their mark all over Scotland, but Eastmill, just outside Auchterarder, is one of those sites where you can actually stand on ground they once occupied. What you're looking at is the remains of a Roman fort - earthworks, mostly, which means your imagination has to do a fair bit of the heavy lifting. The site isn't dramatically excavated or pristine; it's more a series of grassy humps and ditches that make sense once you know what you're looking at.

This is proper history nerd territory. If you've got children under ten, they might find it underwhelming after ten minutes - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just the landscape itself. But for anyone interested in Roman Britain and how the legions moved through Perthshire, it's worth the detour. The walk from Auchterarder is straightforward enough, and the surrounding countryside is lovely for a longer ramble.

Timing-wise, allow thirty to forty minutes to look properly and read up on what happened here. It's free, which is the only way to experience it. Spring and early summer are best - the grass is short enough to see the earthworks clearly, and you won't be squelching through mud.
