Easter Cairn

The walk up Easter Cairn is short but properly steep, rewarding you with views across Fife that stretch all the way to the Forth. It's the sort of place you climb in under twenty minutes, stand about for another twenty enjoying the scenery, then head back down - and that's the whole outing sorted.

You get a proper cairn at the top, the kind that looks like it's been built and rebuilt by walkers for centuries, which it probably has. On a clear day the visibility is excellent. On a grey one - which is most days around here - it's still worth the effort if you've got the legs for it.

Families with older kids will manage fine. Younger ones might find it a slog on the way up, though the summit is small enough that they won't get bored once they arrive. Solo walkers and couples after a quick hit of fresh air and elevation will find exactly what they're after here.

It's the sort of walk that fits perfectly between breakfast and lunch if you're based at one of the local glamping spots. Meadow View Glamping and Camping, just 1.8 miles away near Dunfermline, makes for an easy base - you can be on the summit before mid-morning and back in time for a proper coffee. Fossoway Cabins and West Fife Pods are both within a few miles if you want slightly more space or a different vibe.

Free to visit, no permits needed, no facilities on the hill itself. Take water. The ground gets boggy in places after rain, so proper boots are advisable rather than trainers.
