East Wittering Beach

The shingle stretches for miles at East Wittering, backed by low dunes and a proper seaside feel that hasn't been entirely smoothed over by development. The beach itself is wide and flat - perfect for families who want space to spread out without tripping over someone else's windbreak. Swimming's decent enough when the tide's in, though the water stays cool even in summer.

What makes it work is how accessible it is from Chichester. You're not battling through some overcrowded promenade full of arcades and tat. Instead there's a car park, a few beach huts, and room to actually breathe. The eastern end tends to be quieter if you walk far enough, though it does mean a bit of a trek back if you've got small children in tow.

The shingle can be rough on bare feet - bring shoes or expect complaints. Water shoes are worth the hassle. Go early in summer or stick to shoulder season if crowds irritate you. October and May are genuinely lovely, with fewer families and decent light for photos.

It's a solid day out rather than a revelation. History types won't find much, and it's not the sort of beach for serious walking. What you get is straightforward seaside time, which matters. Close enough to West Sands Holidays that it's an easy morning trip, combining decently with the quieter corners of South Downs if you're after a walk that doesn't feel municipal.
