Birdham Pool

Birdham Pool sits just outside Chichester, a proper local spot that feels worlds away from the city centre despite being barely a stone's throw. It's a freshwater lake ringed with trees, the sort of place where you'll spot herons working the shallows and the occasional flash of kingfisher if you're patient. The water's calm most days, reflecting the sky in that way that makes you understand why people bother with landscape photography.

This is fundamentally a walker's lake rather than a destination in itself. Lying 2-3 miles from several of the area's holiday parks - Stubcroft Farm Campsite, CREATIVE CAMPING and Chichester Lakeside are all within easy reach - it works as a morning or late-afternoon circuit before heading back for food. The light's best in that golden hour before dusk when the water goes molten and the birds start settling. Free to access, no nonsense about it, which is rather refreshing. Don't expect facilities or crowds or Instagram moments. Come for a walk, come for the birds, come to think. It's honest, understated Sussex doing what it does without trying to impress anyone.
