East Quarry

The water at East Quarry sits still and dark, a flooded former stone extraction pit that's become something genuinely worth seeking out if you're staying around Skelmersdale. It's the sort of place that catches you off guard - you turn up expecting scrubland and instead find a proper little lake fringed with trees, surprisingly peaceful for Lancashire.

The quarry itself is best explored on foot. Walking the perimeter takes the better part of an hour, depending on how much time you spend just standing there watching the water. Birdwatchers get particular joy from it - coots, herons, the occasional cormorant. If you've got a decent camera, there's a day's photography in the light bouncing off the surface, especially late afternoon when the banks fall into shadow.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited on its own - there's no café, no facilities, no marked trails that children could burn energy on. But it works well as a break from the caravan during a longer walk, or as a quiet spot to stretch your legs between other activities. The paths are generally solid underfoot, though it can get muddy after rain.

If you're based at Royal Umpire Caravan Park, it's a reasonable drive to get here. The area doesn't have major attractions clustered nearby, so treat it as a peaceful detour rather than a destination in itself. Best visited outside school holidays when it's genuinely quiet.
