East Hill Copse

The woods around East Hill Copse, just inland from Southampton, are proper woodland - the sort of place where you actually feel away from it all despite being nowhere near remote. Dense beech and oak trees create that lovely cool canopy even on warm days, and the forest floor is thick with leaf litter that muffles your footsteps. Walking through here feels older than it probably is, with proper glades opening up unexpectedly and paths that fork without any obvious signage telling you where to go.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with older kids will find it engaging enough for an afternoon, though there's nothing dramatic - no waterfalls, no viewpoints, no visitor facilities. You're paying for solitude and green space rather than a destination. The nearest campsite at Lepe Beach is less than a mile away, which means you could easily pop in for a two-hour ramble before breakfast or as an evening stretch. Sunnycott and Comforts Farm, both within four miles, work well as bases if you're planning a proper New Forest-adjacent break without the crowds that forest brings.

Timing-wise, spring and early autumn are best - fewer insects, better visibility under the canopy, and the undergrowth isn't dense enough to be annoying. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic in here. There's no admission charge and no set hours, which means you can wander whenever it suits. It's not a day-long activity, but it's exactly what you want if your caravan holiday needs a proper woodland walk that isn't a tourist trap.
