East Hetton Colliery

The colliery workings at East Hetton are essentially a walk through industrial archaeology - all overgrown pit heads, crumbling stone structures, and the ghost of what was once a proper working mine. You're looking at remains that date back to the 19th century, when this corner of County Durham was absolutely heaving with coal extraction. The site itself is free to explore, though there's not much in the way of facilities or interpretation boards, so you'll need to do a bit of detective work to understand what you're actually looking at.

It's the sort of place that grabs history enthusiasts and industrial heritage buffs far more than casual visitors. Families with younger kids might find it underwhelming after twenty minutes - there's no visitor centre, no café, and frankly not much to touch or do. But if you're into walking and want to understand how the landscape around Trimdon Station was shaped by mining, it's absolutely worth a morning visit.

Allow a couple of hours if you're thorough. Best visited on a dry day because the ground gets boggy. Coming here as part of a caravan holiday at Woodside Ridge, just over a mile away, makes sense - you can knock it out before heading elsewhere. The site ties neatly into the broader industrial story of the region, and it costs nothing to have a poke around.
