East Farleigh lock

The lock at East Farleigh is one of those riverside spots that works precisely because it doesn't try too hard. Sitting on the Medway between Maidstone and Yalding, it's a proper working lock - still operational, still doing its job - rather than a polished tourist attraction. You can watch boats pass through if the timing works in your favour, or simply stand on the bridge and watch the water levels shift. It's a five-minute stop rather than a half-day excursion, but that's rather the point.

Walkers will find this genuinely useful. The Medway towpath runs right past it, making it a natural waypoint on a longer ramble toward Yalding or back toward Maidstone. The bridge itself offers decent views along the river, and on a clear day the water reflects the sky properly. Families with young children often pause here - kids are transfixed by the mechanics of locks if they're lucky enough to see one operate.

It's free, obviously, and accessible year-round. Spring and summer bring the most boat traffic, which adds a bit of life to the place. If you're staying at Still Acres Touring & Camping Site nearby, it's an easy riverside walk to include in your day. The Hop Farm is further out, but still within striking distance for a morning stroll. Bring nothing but comfortable shoes and a bit of patience. Don't expect crowds or facilities - there's a car park a short walk away, but you're basically parking and walking. Well worth fitting into a Kent river valley weekend if you're in the area.
