East Beach Pond

The shallow waters at East Beach Pond near Chichester attract far more life than you'd expect from what looks, at first glance, like a rather ordinary bit of wetland. Birdwatchers come here seriously - this is proper habitat for waders, wildfowl, and the occasional rarer visitor depending on the season. The pond itself sits right on the coastal fringe, so you get that salt-marsh feeling without needing to trek miles inland.

What you're actually doing is walking the perimeter, watching through binoculars, and occasionally standing still for ten minutes hoping something interesting lands. It's not a dramatic landscape. There's no tea shop, no visitor centre, no interpretive panels telling you what you're looking at. You bring your own knowledge or you download an app. That said, if you're into birds at all, the variety here through autumn and winter is genuinely worth a morning.

Family groups might find it a bit slow unless the kids are already hooked on birdwatching. Serious twitchers and nature photographers absolutely should work it into a Sussex coast trip. Allow two to three hours if you're properly scanning, or forty minutes if you just fancy a quick walk.

It sits nicely within reach of West Sands Holidays if you're basing yourself nearby for a week - close enough for a morning visit before heading to Chichester town or further along the coast. Early morning or dusk tends to be best for spotting anything worth the trip.
