Easan Dubha Waterfall

The walk to Easan Dubha Waterfall near Crianlarich is what makes this worthwhile, not some dramatic pay-to-enter spectacle. You're heading into proper Highland scenery, and the waterfall itself - a decent cascade tumbling into a dark pool - rewards the effort without being so remote that you need mountaineering skills.

The river here moves fast, especially after rain, and the water's genuinely cold. There's something satisfying about standing at the base watching it pour down. On a grey Scottish day, which is most days, the light catches the spray nicely. Allow a good couple of hours for the walk and some time messing about at the waterfall itself.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from it. Kids can manage the route if they're reasonably capable, though muddy sections and tree roots mean it's not a toddle. The nearby Tyndrum Holiday Park sits just five miles away, making this a proper addition to a park-based break in the area - it's the sort of half-day outing that justifies hiring a cottage in Stirling or the Lowlands for a week.

Go when you can, really. There's no entrance fee, no fixed hours. That's the appeal. It's a genuine walk to somewhere real, not a ticketed experience. Crianlarich's close enough for supplies and a post-walk coffee. The waterfall won't blow your mind if you've seen Alpine falls, but it's proper Scottish countryside done right.
