Earth Work

A sprawl of ancient earthworks rises from the Suffolk countryside near Sudbury, remnants of Iron Age settlement that still puzzle archaeologists. Earth Work is less a destination than a proper puzzle - concentric banks and ditches that might have been a defensive fort, or maybe a ritual site. Nobody's entirely certain, which is either fascinating or frustrating depending on your tolerance for unanswered questions.

You walk among the bumps and hollows, trying to imagine what stood here two thousand years ago. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards spelling it out for you. It's just you, the earth, and your own interpretation. That makes it brilliant for anyone who enjoys archaeology without the museum gift shop, but it'll lose most kids within ten minutes.

Allow twenty minutes to half an hour to walk the perimeter and poke around. It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though autumn and winter are better - the surrounding scrub isn't quite so aggressive when growth has died back. Spring's when the site really shows its bones, actually. Bring decent footwear; it gets boggy.

It fits well with a broader ramble around the Stour Valley. Sudbury's close enough for supplies and a decent lunch, and both Cranfield Retreat and Lake View Lodges are five miles away, making this a solid morning's archaeological diversion before heading back for a proper afternoon. Not a showstopper on its own, but worth the detour if you're staying locally and fancy something off the typical tourist trail.
