Eaker Hill

The walk up Eaker Hill rewards you with proper views across Somerset's rolling countryside - nothing too steep, nothing requiring special kit, just a straightforward climb from the Wells side that takes the best part of an hour. On a clear day you're looking out towards the Mendips and across the levels towards Glastonbury Tor, though I'd be honest, it's not one of those peaks that stops you in your tracks. It's a decent walk rather than a destination in itself.

Families with primary-age kids will manage this without complaint. Teenagers might find it a bit tame unless the weather's proper good and the views are sharp. Serious walkers treating it as part of a longer route through the area - perhaps combining it with nearby footpaths - will get more from it. The Mendips are thick with walking routes, so Eaker Hill works best as a leg of something bigger rather than a there-and-back afternoon jaunt.

Wells itself is barely three miles away, so you're well positioned if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Cheddar Camping or Wells Touring Park. There's food and a bed sorted without faffing about. It's the sort of walk you do because you're in the area rather than because you've travelled specially for it. Fine if the weather's on your side, a slog if it's drizzling. Time it early in the day and pair it with exploring Wells Cathedral - that's worth your time far more than the hill itself.
