Eagle Stone

The Eagle Stone sits on a hillside just outside Strathpeffer, a weathered slab of rock carved with Pictish symbols that date back over a thousand years. It's not dramatic - no soaring cliffs or ruins, just an ancient stone with mysterious markings that archaeologists reckon is somewhere between 1,400 and 2,000 years old. The walk up takes maybe fifteen minutes from the car park, and the views back across the valley are genuinely decent, though the stone itself is quite modest when you reach it.

This is really for history buffs or anyone interested in Pictish culture. Casual tourists might find it a bit underwhelming if they're expecting something grander, but if you're into ancient stones and their stories, it's worth the detour. Kids might get restless unless they're already keen on archaeology - there's not much interactive element, just the stone and the landscape around it.

There's no admission charge, which is standard for most Scottish historic sites, and no set opening hours since it's essentially outdoors. Allow an hour including the walk and a bit of standing around wondering what those symbols actually meant.
