Dyke Hills Earthwork

Dyke Hills Earthwork sits just outside Dorchester-on-Thames, about three miles south of the city, comprising two parallel defensive ditches and banks that once protected an ancient settlement. Walk it on a quiet afternoon and you'll get a sense of scale - these things are proper substantial when you're standing between them - but don't expect dramatic ruins or interpretive signage. It's archaeology in its rawest form: grass-covered mounds that require genuine imagination to picture as meaningful fortifications.

History enthusiasts will find real value here, particularly those fascinated by Iron Age Britain and settlement patterns. Walkers heading through the Thames Valley will appreciate the easy terrain and the fact it's free to visit at any time. Kids might manage fifteen minutes before losing interest unless they're genuinely into prehistory.

The nearest town is Oxford itself, though Dorchester-on-Thames offers more immediate context and is worth a visit for its abbey and riverside setting. If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Benson Waterfront is closest at under three miles - this works as a half-hour detour rather than a destination in itself. Spring or autumn are best; wet winters turn the site muddy and far less pleasant.

Truth is, Dyke Hills rewards those who already know what they're looking at. For casual visitors, you'll be standing on grass mounds reading your phone. Worth including in a broader Thames Valley history walk, less worthwhile as a standalone trip.
