Dunure Castle

Dunure Castle sits on a rocky outcrop jutting into the Firth of Clyde, about three miles south of Ayr. It's a proper ruin - medieval stonework tumbling down the clifftside, the kind of place where you can almost hear the salt spray hitting the walls centuries ago. The main structure is a keep, much of it still standing, with enough of the internal chambers visible to get a sense of how cramped medieval living actually was.

You can wander around the perimeter quite freely, clambering over the rocks and picking your way through the overgrown courtyards. The views across the water toward Arran are worth the trip alone - on a clear day you get the mountains rising behind everything else. The walk down from the car park takes maybe ten minutes, and the site itself will keep you occupied for half an hour if you're interested in the architecture, less if you're just after the photos.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit sparse - there's no visitor centre or interpretation, just the stones themselves. But if you've got teenagers or anyone with an interest in Scottish fortifications, it's absolutely worth the short drive from Ayr. The castle dates to the 13th century and saw plenty of action during the Wars of Independence, which adds a bit of texture to what you're looking at.

It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter storms can make the approach slippery. If you're based at Haven Craig Tara, it's practically on your doorstep - a quick detour before heading into Ayr proper.
