Dunturk Mountain

The walk up Dunturk Mountain isn't long, but it's steep enough to remind your legs why you came here. From Castlewellan, it's a straightforward drive inland, and the trailhead is obvious once you know where to look. The summit sits at just over 600 metres, which means the views across County Down aren't dramatic in the Alpine sense, but they're proper rewarding - you can pick out the Mourne Mountains to the south and, on a clear day, the land stretches far enough to make the climb feel worthwhile.

It's a hill for walkers rather than scramblers. The path is well-trodden, took us about ninety minutes there and back including a sit-down at the top, and it's the sort of walk that works well for anyone wanting fresh air without needing serious boots or navigation skills. Families with older kids would manage it fine; younger ones might find the gradient tedious. If you're camping nearby - Slieve Croob Camping and Pine Tree Hollow Glamping are both within striking distance - this makes a solid morning sortie before lunch back at base.

The real strength of Dunturk is its position. It connects to the wider hill-walking landscape around Castlewellan, and from the summit you can plot your next move. Don't expect solitude - it's popular enough on weekends - but it's free to walk and doesn't require booking anything ahead. Go in settled weather. Wet conditions turn the path into a mudslide, and the view becomes academic.
