Dunsford Nature Reserve, Devon Wildlife Trust

The River Teign cuts through a proper slice of Devon woodland here, and Dunsford Nature Reserve is one of those places where you actually notice the difference between a managed park and something left to do its own thing. Managed by Devon Wildlife Trust, it's a working nature reserve rather than a manicured attraction - which means the paths are good but the surroundings feel genuinely wild.

You're walking through mixed woodland with the river running alongside, spotting whatever wildlife decides to show itself that day. Otters, kingfishers, and a decent range of birds if you're patient. The reserve sits just outside Exeter, making it an easy half-day outing without feeling like you've driven miles.

This works best for serious walkers and birdwatchers rather than families wanting a quick splash about. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're going to do it justice. The paths are manageable but you need decent footwear - it gets muddy, especially after rain. It's free to visit, which is worth knowing.

It's not going to blow your mind on a sunny afternoon when the river's crowded with dog walkers, but catch it early or mid-week and you'll understand why the Trust bothers protecting it.
