Dunreyth Alpacas

There's something genuinely odd about turning up to meet a herd of alpacas in the Hampshire countryside near Chichester. You'd expect them in Peru, not pottering about a Sussex field. Yet here they are, and they're properly brilliant if you've got kids or simply fancy a break from the usual tourist trail.

Dunreyth Alpacas is the sort of place that works because it doesn't try too hard. You come to see the animals - long-necked, soft-faced creatures that are far calmer than you'd imagine - and that's genuinely it. Some farms let you feed them or walk them round the paddock; what Dunreyth offers isn't entirely clear from a distance, but the appeal is straightforward enough. Families with young children get the most out of it. Teenagers might manage twenty minutes before their phones come out.

The location works well if you're based at The Old Dairy Farm Glamping or Bow Hill Farm - both top-rated spots within a few miles - and you need a half-day activity that won't drain the budget or require hours of driving. It's the sort of thing you slot in on a quieter afternoon, not a main event.
