Dunmere Pond

A shallow freshwater lake just outside Chichester, Dunmere Pond is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a day around. The water's ringed by reeds and rough grassland, with a few benches dotted about if you fancy sitting and watching dragonflies do their thing.

It's proper good for a bit of birdwatching - herons, grebes, the usual suspects - and walkers appreciate the footpath that runs alongside it. The pond itself is unremarkable to photograph; don't come expecting postcard views. What you get is genuine peace and quiet, especially first thing in the morning or late afternoon when the light's softer and most people have gone elsewhere.

Kids might manage twenty minutes poking about in the reeds before they're ready to move on. This is fundamentally a working nature space, not a destination attraction. Fishermen use it, locals walk dogs here, birdwatchers show up with binoculars. You're visiting their patch, not a leisure venue.
