Dungrovehill Wood

Twenty minutes from Maidenhead, Dungrovehill Wood is proper woodland - the sort of place where you actually feel like you've escaped rather than just wandered fifty yards into trees. It's a working forest with serious trees rather than a manicured country park, so expect muddy paths, fallen logs blocking your route, and the occasional moment where you're not entirely sure which way is out. The paths are decent once you know where you're going, but there's no hand-holding signage, which appeals to people who like a bit of navigation rather than a prescribed walk.

Walkers and families after genuine woodland should allocate an hour here minimum, probably more if you've got curious kids who want to poke about in the undergrowth. It's genuinely good for letting children run around without feeling you're shepherding them down a theme park. The forest canopy is thick enough to be interesting in winter and properly cool in summer.

The parking and access aren't massively obvious from the road, which explains why it doesn't get rammed like some Chiltern spots. Admission appears to be free, though information isn't straightforward online. If you're staying at SRB Moorings Riverside or Shillingridge Glamping - both less than four miles away - it's worth a morning visit before heading back to base. Chiltern Retreat Rural Camping, a bit further south, also puts you within reasonable striking distance. It's not a destination on its own, but it's a proper alternative to the manicured trail circuit.
