Ashley Hill

Ashley Hill is a proper woodland walk just outside Maidenhead, the sort of place locals know and tourists miss. It's genuinely nice - mixed woodland with beech and oak, decent paths that wind through without feeling over-maintained, and enough space to actually breathe if you've driven down the M4 from London.

You're looking at a straightforward forest stroll here, nothing strenuous or dramatic. The appeal is simple: proper trees, quiet, and enough distance to feel properly removed from suburbia even though you're minutes from town. It works well for families with kids old enough to walk a couple of miles without complaining, and for anyone who just wants to clear their head. Dog walkers use it heavily, which tells you it's dog-friendly terrain.

I'd allow an hour for a decent walk without rushing. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - come prepared with water if the weather's warm. Entry appears to be free, which is a bonus.

For a park holiday based at one of the riverside spots near Hurley or Henley - both within easy reach - Ashley Hill slots in nicely as a half-morning option. It's not the sort of place that anchors a trip, but it's well worth the short drive if you're staying locally and want something quieter than the busier Thames-side routes. Go midweek if you can; weekends pull the crowds. The woodland's at its best in spring and autumn when the undergrowth isn't quite so dense.
