Dunglass

The walk up to Dunglass feels longer than the map suggests, but that's partly what makes reaching the summit worthwhile. You're looking at a proper hill rather than a mountain - 407 metres of Scottish Lowland terrain that rewards the effort with views across Stirling towards the Forth Valley and beyond to the Trossachs on a clear day.

From Glasgow, it's accessible enough for a half-day excursion if you're staying in the area. The climb itself takes around 40 minutes from the car park, following a mix of woodland path and open moorland. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter here. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the constant gradient tedious.

What strikes you most is the sense of isolation despite being close to civilization. You're not surrounded by crowds or tourist infrastructure - just heather, grass, and the occasional grouse. The summit cairn is modest but satisfying. On windy days, which are frequent, it can feel quite exposed up there.

The WHW Hotel & Campsite sits just 2.1 miles away, making Dunglass an easy add-on if you're basing yourself in the area. It's worth combining with other walks in the Stirling region rather than treating it as a standalone trip. Go midweek if possible - weekends can get surprisingly busy with locals getting their steps in. Allow two to three hours total including breaks.
