Dundrennan Air Crash Memorial

The moorland above Dundrennan holds something most visitors to Kirkcudbright never know about. In 1944, a Lancaster bomber crashed here during a training flight, killing all seven crew members. Today a simple stone memorial marks the spot where they went down.

It's a walk to get here rather than a destination you drive to. You'll need to park near the village and head out across open countryside - the kind of landscape that's beautiful precisely because nothing much happens in it.
