Dundon Beacon

The walk up to Dundon Beacon rewards you with proper views across the Somerset Levels - a landscape that's genuinely flat and endless below. It's a short, straightforward climb from Street, and once you're there, the sense of isolation is striking for somewhere so accessible.

This is a Bronze Age burial mound, though what you're actually looking at is a grassy hill with an Iron Age fort layered on top. History types will appreciate the layers, but honestly, most visitors come for the vantage point. On a clear day you can see for miles. The walk itself takes about twenty minutes from the carpark at the base, and it's not steep - bit boggy underfoot in winter, mind you.

Families with primary-school kids will get something out of it - the climb's easy enough and kids like the idea of a proper Bronze Age burial site, even if they can't actually see anything ancient from ground level. Walkers doing longer circuits around the area might fit it in as a loop, and it pairs nicely with exploring the Polden Hills nearby.

Stay at Orchard Farm Luxury Glamping just 2.3 miles away and you've got an excellent base. The site's highly rated and Dundon Beacon is genuinely close - no messing about with long drives. Go in spring or early autumn when the Levels are at their greenest and the light's softer. Worth half a morning at most, but the views make the detour worthwhile.
