The stretch of sand and shingle along Dundee's waterfront works as a proper urban beach - and that's exactly what makes it unusual. Kids will get a solid hour or so out of paddling and skimming stones, though it's not the sort of place to base an entire day around unless you're combining it with Tayport's attractions nearby. The water's cold and the beach can feel exposed when the wind's up - bring a windbreaker and patience.

There's no admission charge, which is the whole appeal really. Head there on a clear afternoon when the light's decent and the tide's out a bit further.
