Dundee Science Centre

The Science Centre sits right on Dundee's waterfront, and you'll spot the distinctive ship-shaped building before you've even parked. It's impossible to miss - all curves and angles that catch the light off the Tay. Inside, it's very much a hands-on affair, with interactive galleries spread across multiple levels that work brilliantly for families with kids aged five to fifteen. The planetarium is genuinely impressive, and the chemistry and physics exhibits don't feel patronising to teenagers either.

You're looking at a solid three to four hours here if you want to do it properly. Younger children might hit a wall after two, but there's enough variety that most families find their rhythm. Entry isn't free, but it's reasonable value compared to similar attractions down south. The location near Tayport makes it a natural fit if you're basing yourself at Tayport Links Caravan Park or Larick Campsite - you're less than five miles away, so it's an easy morning or afternoon trip without a major trek.

It works best on drizzly days when outdoor options are limited, which in this part of Scotland happens fairly regularly. The café is adequate but uninspired, so eat before or bring snacks. History buffs might find it less engaging than science enthusiasts, but it does a decent job explaining Dundee's industrial heritage through the lens of engineering and discovery. Worth the detour if you've got children in tow.
