The building itself is the first thing that grabs you - all glass and copper, sitting right in the heart of Dundee like something from the future landed in the middle of Scotland. Inside, it's genuinely impressive: seven storeys of books, reading spaces, and enough quiet corners to lose yourself for an afternoon.

This is a proper working library, not some museum piece. You'll find everything from rare books to the latest releases, plus decent computers if you need them. The top floors have views across the Tay - worth climbing the stairs for alone. There's a café tucked in somewhere too, which helps if you're planning to stay longer than an hour.

It works brilliantly for families with older kids who can appreciate the space without needing constant entertainment. Younger children might find it a bit much. History buffs will enjoy the local collections, and anyone after a rainy-day activity will thank you for the recommendation.

Free to enter - it's a public library, after all. You could easily spend two to three hours here without rushing. If you're staying at Tayport Links Caravan Park or Larick Campsite, both just a few miles away, it's worth combining with a wander around Dundee's waterfront. The walk from Tayport is doable if you're up for stretching your legs, though it's not the most scenic route. Don't come expecting grand architecture on the outside - that glass exterior divides opinion - but the interior is worth the trip.
