Dunblane Cathedral

The cathedral sits right in the heart of Dunblane, a modest town that's easy to miss if you're just passing through Perthshire. What you'll find inside, though, is genuinely worth stopping for - a 13th-century tower that's one of Scotland's finest pieces of medieval architecture, attached to a much-restored kirk that somehow works rather well despite the centuries of tinkering.

The tower is the real draw. It's substantial, properly impressive, and the stone work speaks to real craftsmanship. Inside, the light through the windows is lovely, and you get a real sense of centuries of worship layered on top of each other. The reconstruction work done in the 1880s gets a bit Victorian-fussy in places, but it doesn't wreck the atmosphere.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the building's links to Scotland's religious past, though I'd be honest - you'll spend a good thirty to forty-five minutes here maximum, unless you're genuinely deep into medieval ecclesiastical architecture. Families with restless kids might find it a bit lean; there's not much to interact with or explore beyond the main space.

It's free to wander in, which is generous. Opening hours are reasonable enough if you're timing a visit around Witches Craig or Craighead Howf caravan parks - both solid bases if you're doing a longer Perthshire trip. Best bet is a weekday morning in spring or early autumn, when it's quiet and the light's proper.
