Argaty Red Kites

You're standing at a feeding station in Stirling where red kites - those magnificent fork-tailed raptors - come in to eat. It's genuinely thrilling. The visitor centre at Argaty is set up specifically so you can watch these birds without disturbing them, and on a good day you'll see several circling overhead or landing close enough to make out the rust-coloured plumage.

The whole thing works because of a feeding programme that's helped bring red kites back from the brink in Scotland. You get the story of the reintroduction project, see displays about the birds, and then settle in to watch. It's free to watch from outside, though donations keep things running.

This is absolutely brilliant for anyone genuinely interested in birds of prey - proper wildlife watching, not a zoo experience. Kids who can sit still for ten minutes will find it exciting; younger children might get restless. Bring binoculars if you've got them. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be busier for sightings.

Dunblane is just down the road, which puts you well-positioned for a wider trip through Stirling's parks. Craighead Howf and Keltie Bridge are both within easy reach if you're basing yourself nearby. Callander Woods is slightly further but still manageable as a day out from the same area. The red kites work well as part of a broader Lowlands park holiday - it's not a full day's activity on its own, but it's a cracking spot to add to an itinerary.
