Dumbarton Castle park

You're standing on a volcanic crag that's been fortified since medieval times, with views across the Clyde that stretch for miles. Dumbarton Castle sits at the heart of its own nature reserve, and it's a properly dramatic spot - two rocky outcrops rising up from the river valley, commanding the landscape in a way that makes you understand immediately why someone built a fortress here.

The walk up is steep enough to feel like proper exercise, but it takes only about twenty minutes to reach the summit. The views pay off: on a clear day you can see Loch Lomond to the north and the industrial heritage of Dumbarton itself spread below. History buffs will appreciate the castle's role as a royal stronghold - Mary Queen of Scots was held here - though the castle itself is just ruins now. Most people come for the walk and the vantage point rather than extensive historical interpretation.

Bring sturdy shoes. The paths can be muddy, and you're clambering over rocks near the top. It's accessible for reasonably fit families with older kids, though littler ones might struggle with the gradient. Allow ninety minutes if you're dawdling with a camera. Free entry, no facilities on site.
