Dulais Valley Quads

The Dulais Valley holds something you won't find on most tourist itineraries - four massive concrete structures that dominate the landscape like monuments to industrial Wales. These quads, as locals call them, are all that remain of what was once a thriving colliery operation. They're stark, imposing, and absolutely worth stopping for if you're driving through Neath Port Talbot heading towards Swansea.

What you're looking at are the pithead gear frames - the skeletal towers that once hauled coal from deep underground. Standing in front of them, you get a real sense of the scale of the mining industry that shaped this entire region. It's not a polished visitor attraction with interpretive boards and a gift shop. It's raw industrial heritage, left largely as it was abandoned, and that's precisely what makes it compelling.

History buffs will appreciate this far more than casual day-trippers. Families with older children might find it interesting for twenty minutes, but there's nothing interactive or particularly kid-friendly here. Walkers pass through regularly - it's an easy spot to visit if you're exploring the valley on foot.
